Why We’ve Come Full Circle

Do our kids enjoy eating healthy food?  As parents, we know the answer is usually a resounding “no.”  Part of the reason is the refinement of target messaging (advertising) by large conglomerates delivered directly to our kids.

The looks and comments in this video were not surprising based on what those lunches contained, but what really struck me was that until the 1940s, kids ate healthier, more natural food in smaller portions than today, because that is what was available.

During World War II, Spam was introduced as a way to feed our soldiers a reasonably nutritious diet (for the time) that didn’t require much in the way of special storage.  After the war, it found its way into the diet of our kids and it seems like it was the first step toward processed food becoming a major part of their diets.

By the 1970s, believe it or not, Jell-O and soda were mainstays and the processed food race was in full swing.  Advertising focused on the alleged time-savings for busy moms while simultaneously targeting our kids with the simple message that a lunch consisting of a Twinkie and soda tasted better then old-fashioned carrots and apples.

Full Circle

Today, we’re slowly returning to the natural food represented during the video’s first 30 years. We, as a society, are finally accepting that there may be a correlation between children’s’ behavior, obesity, and disease, and the highly processed, high-sugar foods that have been so widely accepted.

We’ve always known that our kids need to eat healthy, organically grown food balanced with our realistic understanding that our kids have a sweet tooth.  During the last 50 years, we’ve been sold on the idea that preparing healthy food was too time-consuming in a world where we’re trying to cram 30 hours of work into each 24-hour day.

But is it really less time-consuming?

Reading Labels

Breakfast is usually the most hectic meal of the day.  Cereal has been a popular breakfast food for a long time because it’s fast and can be nutritious.

When you compare our delicious granola with processed cereal, you’ll notice 3 things:

  • Your kids will love the sweet taste of Michigan maple syrup, brown cane sugar, pure vanilla, and cinnamon.
  • It’s a healthier breakfast or snack for your family because it contains no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors, and the best natural ingredients.
  • Our recommended serving size is smaller but more filling, which moves us back to the healthy serving sizes found in the first part of the 1900s.

Just pour our granola in a bowl, add milk or Greek yogurt for extra protein, and you’re done.
